  hpi Checks history. With  an increase in car ownership and a rise in the number of used cars available in the 30''s came a new type of crime. Cars, were very expensive items and were being used as a form of security for additional finance agreements, loans and Hire Purchase (HP) agreements. Some owners would then take out further finance against the vehicles. Some would then sell the cars and because nobody was able to check the finance information, were able to stop paying their  finance agreements leaving the new owners without a car after it was repossed by the finance companies.

Something needed to be done to stop this new form of crime and the six big finance lenders decided to get together and share their data to stop people from using their vehicles as security repeatedly and to keep a track of vehicles being sold through the motor trade. This led to the formation of Hire Purchase Investigations (HPI) in 1938 and hpi check was born.

The Police decided to make their stolen vehicle data available to hpi check in 1947, which helped reduce the number of stolen cars being offered  for sale through the motor trade. Not alot changed with hpi checks until the 1980''''s when insurers also began adding their data to hpi checks, helping to protect buyers from buying used vehicles that had previously been written off and deemed un-economical or unsafe to repair. However it  was not until  the early 90''''s  that the data was made available to the general public.

Hpi checks has since become a generic term (especially within the motor trade) for used vehicle checks but up until recently hpi had a near monopoly but that has changed now and thanks to the internet it is now more affordable than ever to get vehicle checks online.
